Learn to fly above the water

An eFoil lifts you clear of the surface on a single wing — silent, wakeless, and unlike anything else on the water. Joe's Flight School takes complete beginners from the beach to their first flight, with all the gear and a lot of patience.

The sport

It's not a surfboard. It's a wing.

An eFoil is a board with a hydrofoil mounted underneath and a battery-powered motor in the mast. You control the speed with a wireless hand throttle. Once you're moving fast enough, the foil generates lift, the board leaves the surface, and you're riding on a wing a couple of feet below you — no waves, no wind, no tow boat needed.

Flat water is all you need

No swell, no wind window. Calm mornings on a lake or a protected bay are ideal conditions — which makes it far easier to learn than surfing or kiting.

Most people fly the first day

The learning curve is genuinely short. A typical first session goes knees, then standing, then a first sustained flight — usually inside a couple of hours.

No experience required

Prior board sports help a little, but they aren't necessary. Balance, a bit of core strength and a willingness to fall in are the real prerequisites.

What to expect

Your first flight, step by step

Nobody stands up in the first minute, and that's the point. The progression is deliberately slow so that when the foil does lift, you're ready for it.

Briefing on the beach

How the board and foil work, how the throttle responds, where to put your weight, and — most importantly — how to fall off safely and away from the equipment.

Riding on your knees

You start low and stable, getting a feel for the throttle and how the board tracks. This is where most of the muscle memory is built.

Standing up

Still on the surface, still planing. You learn to find the sweet spot on the board and hold a steady line before the foil ever comes into play.

The first lift

A small change in weight and speed, and the board goes quiet as it leaves the water. It's a strange, floating feeling. Then you'll fall in — and go straight back for another.

Safety & gear

Everything you need is provided

A foil is a hard object moving through the water, and it's treated with respect from the first minute of the briefing. Bring yourself and swimwear — the rest is covered.

Helmet & impact vest

Both are required for every rider, every session, regardless of experience level or swimming ability.

Wetsuits in all sizes

Provided and sized on arrival. TODO: confirm size range

Instructor on the water

You're never sent out alone. Your instructor stays with you throughout the session and is in reach the whole time.

Kill switch on every board

The throttle is wirelessly tethered to the rider. Separate from the board and the motor stops immediately.

Who you're riding with

Two friends who never got over the water

An eFoil lesson means trusting a stranger with a powered board in open water. Who's holding the other end of that matters, so here's exactly who we are.

Still at it

We've been at this since the fifth grade

That's us up there in TODO: confirm year, and TODO: which two are Joe and Mike?. The venue has changed and the toys got a lot faster, but it's the same two people.

That's also why we're careful with it. Neither of us wants to be the one who put his oldest friend's name on a bad afternoon.

Questions

Before you book

Anything not covered here, just ask — a quick email is faster than guessing.

Do I need to know how to surf?

No. eFoiling is one of the few board sports you can learn without any board background at all. The motor does the hard part — you're learning balance and weight placement, not wave reading or paddling.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable in open water and able to swim in a flotation vest. You will fall in, repeatedly, and you'll need to get yourself back onto the board with the instructor nearby.

Are there age or weight limits?

TODO: confirm minimum age and rider weight range — these are set by the equipment, and will be listed here before booking opens.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and water. Wetsuit, helmet, impact vest and all board equipment are provided. Contact lenses are worth leaving at home — bring glasses with a strap or go without.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Sessions run in calm conditions. If wind, chop or a storm makes it unsafe, the session is rescheduled at no cost. That call is made by the instructor, not the forecast.

Can somebody come and watch?

Yes — spectators are welcome from the shore. TODO: confirm launch site access and parking
